Willong Khullen: The Mysterious Stonehenge of India.

On the way to Yang Khullen is Willong Khullen, another small village in the Senapati district of Manipur. I heard about this village from some friends of my friend as they were explaining to me about the history and peculiarities of the region. The village is famous for its presence of the Megalithic Stonehenge which is similar to that of England. While we go to the English land to have a first hand experience of the Stonehenge, unfortunately, we are totally ignorant of our own rich heritage sites. Except for the people from the vicinity of the village who always lived with these stone structures, nobody knows about the presence of a Stonehenge in this area.

The Stonehenge of Willong Khullan.

Northeast India is one of the major locations in the archaeological map of India for its prominent presence of Megalithic remains distributed around. What makes the case of the Stonehenge in Willong  Khullen curious is the mystery behind it. Nobody has a proper answer for the reason for the presence of the these huge erupted structures of stones. Some believe they are erupted by the spirits of their forefathers. Or it can also be the case that it's a secret kept within the community for sacred or exclusive reasons. But the interesting part is that, to date, nobody could count the exact number of the structures in the premise. The number of these megalithic structures are believed to be different everytime you count it and an explanation for the same is not yet available which makes the place a hub of mysteries and myths.

I believe travelling is also about acquiring knowledge. And, this in that way was the second fortune that was there in store for me during the trip to Manipur.  That chance I got to explore some of the unknown corners of the state.

Maram Khullen was the first among those villages I got to visit during my stay in Manipur. The journey was an uphill one and it added more scenic flavours as we went up covering each curve. How She Met Her Cameras !!!

Before starting with my photo stories, I felt I should write about how I got introduced to the world of cameras and photographs. And, it's not just the inspiring learning process, but also the stories of how shortlived the cameras were in my life too. Someway or the other, I was the reason for each of the cameras stopped working at my house. I was the keeper of cameras, but the agency of damaging them was there recurring throughout my life. The first ever camera on which I had tried my hand was an old model of Kodak (Extralite 10),  the rectangular flat one, owned by my dad. On contrary to today's digital era and hundreds of retakes and editing options, I started my photography lessons in cameras which functioned with negatives with only a limited number of photographs that can be clicked. I came to Hyderabad in 2009. The city was never in my plans when I was thinking of my higher studies, even if I had appeared for the entrance exams. I won't say that I had fallen in love with the city immediately, from the first day or first few years. But gradually even without realising something has bound me to this one. The Girl from the Hills...

 My travel chronicles started from the day I cannot even remember, with the journeys to the tea estates of Peermade as my dad was working with a tea production company which was found in 1925. My grandparents and a few grand-uncles also shared a history of being part of the same tea company in different estates. Carady-Goody and Arnakal, these tea estates have a legacy which dates back to the Colonial Era of India.   From Misano Adriatico, almost an hour long journey will take you to this amazing and one of the smallest countries in the world, The Republic of  San Marino. Yang Khullen... A Less Known Nook of Manipur.

Earlier this year when we were planning a trip to the North Eastern part of India, all I had in mind was to visit some well-known locations (if possible) as the trip was not merely a travel-focused one, but more of a stay. I was staying at my friend's place experiencing the Maram culture from a close watch (of which I will talk in detail in a separate post later). After some 10 days, she told me that we will visit some of those villages and I readily agreed. I didn't even ask her the names or peculiarities of the places, but was all set for an exploration as visiting certain villages in this part of the country is a golden chance. I t was totally unexpected that I got a chance to travel to Italy in 2017. And, the most exciting part was that it was the first ever solo trip of my life. After an adventurous journey across the oceans and continents, I reached my destination which was an unknown corner for me in the map of Italy, a small but beautiful seaside town called Misano Adriatico which is located in the Province of Rimini in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. Even if it was a solo and my first international trip, I would say that it was the most unplanned travel I have ever had, as the primary purpose of the travel was academic and I was in a hurry making all the arrangements.
